What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is an ultra durable, environmentally friendly, electrostatic “painting” process that is both protective and aesthetic! Unlike traditional “liquid” painting, powder coating utilizes dry pigment “powders” which are completely free of any VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). VOC’s are what make traditional liquid paints so bad for the environment. Powder coating is completely VOC free.
Powder Coating is applied in a manner that allows us to recapture any dry powder pigment that doesn’t adhere to the intended surface, known as over-spray, so there is very little waste if any. This adds to the environmentally friendly aspect of powder coating.
In the powder coating process the part that is to be coated is first cleaned to remove any oils, waxes, grease or other contaminants by a sand blasting process. This ensures full adhesion of the powder as well as an even coat. The part is then electrically grounded. The pigmented powder is sprayed through an electrostatic corona gun which imparts a negative charge to the powder. The powder is then attracted to the part by the electrostatic charge. The part is then cured at around 400 degrees F for a number of minutes. The resulting coating is both durable and aesthetic. The durability of powder coat far exceeds that of liquid painting making it one of our most popular protective coatings.
